Hiring

I am hiring a developer who lives in a lower-cost area than I do. Posted ranges feel arbitrary. Should I pay by role, by location or by what they would accept? I do not want resentment later if team members compare numbers.

We are a six-person heating and cooling company with more calls than we can handle. Job posts bring few qualified applicants. Is it better to train people with no experience, offer higher pay, or partner with a trade school?

A close friend is out of work and good at customer support, which I badly need. I worry about what happens if it does not work out or if I have to give hard feedback. Has anyone done this successfully, and what ground rules helped?

I run a small marketing analytics firm doing about $250k a year. I need help with reporting, about 20 hours a week. A contractor is cheaper short-term, but I want reliability and someone who learns the business. What drove your decision and would you choose differently?

I have been freelancing as a copywriter for four years, with more work than I can handle, and I am about to bring on two subcontractors. I am worried about quality control and margins. What would you do differently if you were starting that transition again?

Everything lives in my head, and when my one operations person was out sick for a week, things nearly collapsed. I tried writing long manuals that nobody read. What lightweight format worked for your team, and who kept it up to date?

I close every deal myself, about four a month, and I am the bottleneck. A rep would cost roughly $85k a year plus commission. I worry that nobody else can explain the product as well, and that I would waste months training someone. What signals told you the process was ready to hand off?

Three months in, my operations coordinator misses deadlines and customers have noticed. I gave informal feedback twice. I never wrote anything down. What is the cleanest way to handle performance and a possible exit for a team of six with no HR person?
